Employees: Learn about Social Media at Hinds CC & Earn PDI Credit!

I will be presenting a one-hour session for faculty and staff showcasing how Hinds Community College uses social media on a daily basis. During this session, I will cover popular social media tools such as Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter and YouTube and explain how Hinds CC uses them to answer inquiries, publicize news/events and create a strong online presence. I will also be happy to answer questions you have about social media.

How-To: Use Career Coach and Social Networking for Job Search

 

Today there are tons of tools and services available to help you get started on a career path, meet professionals, learn from people with similar interests, and find a great job. You never know when an online contact may be your next boss!

It's important to figure out what you want in a career. What do you truly love to do? What is important to you? What are your personal goals? What are you doing to reach your goals? When you know the answers to these things, it’s much easier to answer a prospective employer.

Once you have ideas about what you would enjoy doing or could be good at, Hinds Community College offers an awesome online tool to help you research specific jobs or career fields. Career Coach at Hinds CC provides salary information, the employment forecast (are jobs going to be available?) and education requirements for these jobs. It also shows what jobs are currently available in our area.Career Coach logo

Career Coach is very easy to use, but there is a video tutorial and a printable guide to help you get started on the Hinds CC website. Enter a job that you're interested in and Career Coach will help you hit the ground running.

Here are a few more tips for using the internet to market yourself and your skills online.

#1 Remember that with the communication tools available today, the world is at your fingertips and you MUST clean up your act online. What will potential employers think when they Google your name and find the flame war you started about the company where you last worked. Just remember, you are not invisable on the internet. When you share information about yourself, you share it wih EVERYONE…including the HR professionals in charge of hiring someone for your dream job. They WILL google you and make sure you aren’t acting crazy on facebook, have an innapropriate twitter handle, or are sharing information about the clients who have trusted you with their privacy. Photographic evidence of poor choices will cost you a job. If you’ve been lax with your online reputation, work hard to clean up your online image.

#2 Create a Twitter Account. If you have an account that you tweet messages to your friends about funny things your cat has done, create a NEW twitter account for professional affairs. If you are wanting a job in Public Relations, Nursing, Architecture or whatever- search for that and things related to your field. Follow people, learn, create content to share, and meet people with shared interests. Show that you're an asset to your professional field and all sorts of doors may open.

#3 Create a LinkedIn account. LinkedIn is different than other social networking sites. You can write all you want about being in love and post pictures of your newest piercing on Facebook (assuming you have decent privacy settings so everyone in the world can’t see your goofiness)….but that's not the thing to do on LinkedIn. Think of LinkedIn as a stage for your professional self. How do you want your profile to look if it finds its way in front of executives looking for talented people to fill vacancies that they may never even advertise. Once you join LinkedIn:

A. Create a professional looking profile. If you have never had a job, include volunteer work, organizations you belong to, etc. Be authentic, don't exaggerate your skills or experience.

B. Search for Contacts you already know using the search function. You can also have LinkedIn use your email contacts to search for you. If you find someone you know, ask them to be a contact. Be smart about who you add.

C. Join Groups! This is really important because it will get you jobs! It’s not the joining the group that does the magic; it’s your PARTICIPATION in groups. Share information, ask questions, get to know people in your groups and add them as contacts. Answer questions you know when people ask. If you become someone that people go to for answers, you become someone they would recommend to an employer or a contact that they know who may be looking to hire someone just like YOU.

The LinkedIn YouTube channel is a great place to get any help you need.

When you engage in professional social networking, you will learn a ton of information and have the opportunity to market yourself and keep your communication & other professional skills sharp. Keep your profile up to date, visit and converse with network contacts & groups regularly. You will begin to accrue recommendations. When you believe you deserve a recommendation from someone, ask them.

#4 Hinds students - Remember that you have the Career Services Center to help you! The Career Services Center can provide employment opportunities, help with resume writing, preparation for interviews and more. Make sure to check their page out. Tweet, tweet, tweet! No, it’s not a bird, or a plane, it’s Twitter! Twitter, (http://www.twitter.com), is a very popular social media tool that allows users to write brief text updates, no more than 140 characters, about what’s going on in their lives. Users can write or tweet about pretty much anything. Popular tweets, also known as trending topics, often come from news in the areas of entertainment, politics, technology and sports. An example of Twitter’s trending topics is shown below:

Twitter also allows users to find out what’s going on in the lives of others. By following family members, friends, companies and even celebrities, users can build up their Twitter feeds to receive tweets from a variety of people around the world. In addition to following others, users can interact with each other by retweeting (RTing) or reposting a user’s tweets, responding to a user’s tweet directly (indicated by starting the tweet with the @sign + twitterusername) and favoriting tweets. This interactive feature of Twitter is very unique and helpful because you can communicate with people on a level not necessarily possible in everyday life.

Another useful feature of Twitter is the ability to tweet images, links and videos. Users who include these types of media in their tweets are likely to attract more attention because their tweets are supplemented with additional information. For example, if you tweet about an upcoming event, you may not be able to include every detail about it due to Twitter’s 140-character tweet limit. However, if you include a link to the event website or a photo flyer in your tweet, you are able to overcome this limitation. As you use Twitter, you will notice all kinds of creative uses of links, images and videos to enhance tweets. Here’s a recent example of how Hinds CC used an image to introduce the 2012 Homecoming Court:

So, how does Hinds Community College  (@hindscc) use Twitter? We use Twitter to inform the Hinds community and general public about upcoming events, answer followers’ questions, share Hinds CC news, document student life and interact with our followers by retweeting and favoriting their tweets. Social Media at Hinds

 

Welcome to Hinds Community College’s blog! My name is David Mora and I am the Social Media Specialist for Hinds Community College. I am originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, but I’ve lived in various cities in Louisiana, Mississippi and Georgia throughout my life. I am a proud two-time alumnus of the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication and Journalism (Film emphasis) and a Master’s degree in Instructional Technology from Southern Miss. I came to Hinds Community College from the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia, where I worked as an eLearning Specialist.

Since starting at Hinds CC in July 2012, my goal has been to increase the college’s presence within the world of social media. So far, my progress has been excellent; I post regularly to Hinds CC’s Facebook and Twitter pages. I’ve also created and maintained official Hinds CC accounts on FourSquare, Instagram, Pinterest and Storify. As technology continues to change, Hinds will evolve as well.

Communication within our social media sites is important. The recent events associated with Hurricane/Tropical Storm Isaac highlight the need for right information quickly. Before Isaac reached Central Mississippi, I was able to use Hinds’ Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts to communicate the operating status of Hinds Community College. Being able to receive your questions and comments helps Hinds become a better place. That being said, we want you to be involved in this process!

One of the easiest ways to be a part of Hinds social media is to use the Hinds CC hashtag: #hindscc. Whenever I post updates to Hinds Twitter account (http://www.twitter.com/HindsCC) or upload photos on Hinds’ Instagram (http://www.gramfeed.com/hindscc) from my mobile phone, I always use the #hindscc hashtag. Using #hindscc also allows us to view your Hinds content. For example, during graduation, we use our Storify account (http://www.storify.com/HindsCC) to document the events of the day with our content as well as social media content from those who use the #hindscc hashtag.

Hinds Community College also uses social media as a tool to help our students. Our Pinterest account (http://www.pinterest.com/HindsCC) contains several virtual pin boards focused on healthy habits, student involvement opportunities and general college success tips. Hinds has also established a FourSquare account (http://www.foursquare.com/HindsCC) to help new students find their way around campus via a virtual map. Lastly, the Hinds CC Facebook page  (http://www.facebook.com/HindsCC  provides students with important updates and general Hinds community news.

We’ve created this blog to provide information and tips to the Hinds Community. Topics such as academic programs, campus life, online netiquette, professional development opportunities and much more will be covered. If there is anything you want us to cover, please let us know!
