“It’s  a lot to handle. Not a lot of people can do this at one time, juggle everything. So, being able to do all this and showing them, you know, that if you have your mind set on something you can always do it.”

That’s my favorite quote from the video interview I did with Breanna Green, a player on the Hinds women’s soccer team. The interview recounted the highs and lows of the last few years of Green’s life, and by the end, the PR staff and coaches in the room were tearing up with Green as she expressed her hopes for her young children.

“I hope they can look up and say that my mom did that… being the best that I can be…and I love y’all,” Green said as emotion overcame her.

The interview was for the first in a series of videos highlighting student-athletes at Hinds Community College. The series will focus on an student-athlete from each sport.

When I started work on this series, I expected to profile student-athletes with  stories of achievement, obstacles overcome and natural leaders. I didn't expect, however, to be so moved emotionally by the very first interview. Breanna is such an inspiring person and I hope you will watch the full video.

I am currently working on the next installment of the series, which will feature Byron Galvin, a defensive back on the Hinds Eagles football team. After interviewing Galvin and his coaches, it is clear Galvin leads his fellow teammates by example and is always ready to go the extra mile.

We are currently accepting nominations from coaches for student-athletes to feature next. To nominate an athlete, email april.garon@hindscc.edu with their name, sport, and why they should be featured.
