On Tuesday, October 2nd, Hinds Community College’s Rankin Campus hosted its annual iTechnology Show for Rankin County high school students at the Clyde Muse Center. The show featured several of Hinds CC’s academic and career/technical programs as well as local businesses. This was my first time going to the event and I was very excited to experience all the iTechnology show had to offered.
When I entered the Muse Center, I had no idea what to expect. As I continued on into the show area, I was surprised to see a live fashion show being held. The fashion show, sponsored by Hinds CC’s Fashion Marketing Management Technology program, featured Hinds CC students and local high school students modeling the latest fashion styles and trends on a real catwalk. The show was very authentic; photographers and videographers documented the models’ every move and an emcee described the fashions from head to toe. I was really impressed by the amount of detail and professionalism that went into making this show.
Next, I stopped by Hinds CC’s Culinary Arts Technology program booth. At this station, several culinary arts students were demonstrating how to make bananas foster. The student chefs wowed the crowd with their flambé and its end result, a wonderfully tasty dessert. The culinary arts students also gave out copies of the dessert recipe and answered questions about the program. This area was very popular with show attendees because the dessert was absolutely delicious!
After leaving the culinary arts technology booth, I checked out a series of career/technical programs including Collision Repair Technology, Drafting & Design Technology, Electrical Technology, Landscape Management Technology and Plumbing Technology. I was able to learn a lot about each program, including total length, course expectations and future career opportunities. I enjoyed being able to interact with professors and students who gave me firsthand knowledge of what it’s like to teach and study in each program.
Overall, I had a wonderful time at the iTechnology Show! I learned a lot about the different programs Hinds CC has to offer and enjoyed meeting faculty and students. I wish an opportunity such as this one existed when I was in high school; it would have been nice to learn about different career industries and opportunities before starting college.
