A few weeks ago, I was walking around the Hinds CC Raymond campus and stumbled upon the Katherine Denton Art Building. Since I’ve always enjoyed creating and viewing art (photography is my favorite medium), I decide to go into the building and explore. As I walked through the hall, I noticed the walls were filled with several student sketches. Continuing on my journey in the building, I entered a classroom where students were molding clay into pottery. I watched the students as they took ordinary pieces of clay and transformed them into extraordinary bowls and vases. I was taken aback at the level of precision and care that goes into making pottery. It is certainly more difficult than it looks to produce smooth, professional looking pottery.

After spending time with the pottery class, I headed next door to an empty drawing classroom. The desks were positioned in a circle around a table. Several types of objects, including water pitchers and vases, were currently on display. Hinds Art students had referenced these objects when creating the sketches I saw when entering the building.

My last stop in the Art Building was to the Marie Hull Art Gallery. I was very excited to learn that Hinds CC has an active gallery. I don’t know of many community colleges that have galleries with more than one or two exhibitions per calendar year. The Marie Hull Gallery has a total of six exhibitions for the 2012-2013 school year. Check the end of this blog post for a list of the Marie Hull Art Gallery’s exhibition schedule.

The exhibition I viewed was “At Home and Abroad” by artist Patti Henson. The majority of the works in Patti’s exhibition were beautiful watercolors. Patti’s work had a variety of subject matters including architecture, animals and still life. One of my favorite pieces in the exhibition was a watercolor titled “Lion’s Share – Paris”. This piece was particularly appealing to me due to Patti’s use of vibrant colors and attention to detail.

I found the Marie Hull Art Gallery to be a nice, inviting place to view and appreciate works of art. Next time you are on the Raymond campus, be sure to check out the gallery. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 8:00 AM-3:00 PM & Friday 8:00AM – 12:00PM.
