January was a good month to celebrate milestones for both me and Hinds Community College. Both Hinds and I are celebrating anniversaries. I’ve been at Hinds 10 years, as of Jan. 8. But the college is celebrating something much bigger and more important all throughout 2017 – our Centennial!

The Hinds Community College-Utica Campus hosted a fashion show in December at the Bobby G. Cooper Fine Arts Auditorium that featured Hinds students as models and cosmetology and barbering competitors from community colleges across the state. This was the first event of its kind hosted by the campus and showcased the talents of students in Career-Technical Education programs.
Many of the outfits modeled were made by Hinds students in the Fashion Technology program. Others were pieces designed by the program's instructor, Dr. Curtis Gore.

Whether it be a funny moment or heartfelt thanks, every Hinds employee has a story to tell about their time working for Mississippi’s largest community college.

It’s been said that business is the engine of any free-market economy. I’ll add that people are the fuel that keeps the engine running. When you go to a bank, order a meal, drive on the highway, or buy a car, it takes people doing their jobs well to make those little trips run smoothly.

The Bus Barn Barbecue has been a tradition at Hinds Community College since about 1968. This event is held usually the first or second week in December. It started out with Billy Banes, Coach Joe Renfroe, Powell Taylor (Supervisor of the Bus Barn) and Henry King (Grounds Supervisor). These guys got together and decided to cook a lunch for the Grounds and Bus Barn employees.
