It’s rare to check out true virtuosity from any art form’s masters AND students of any craft in the same show – all for free. You’ll pay top dollar even to see washed-up rock acts in the smallest of venues.
Such wasn’t the case on April 16 when I caught the best of the morning and evening sessions of the Alcorn State University’s 36th annual Jazz Festival at the Vicksburg Convention Center. The Hinds Community College Stage Band turned into a top-flight jazz ensemble that Saturday morning, under the direction of Music Instructor Randy Mapes. I managed to snap a few photos from a distance with my cellphone.April 29, 2016 | by Tracy Duncan
Hinds Community College students who may or may not major in art, take courses in photography, ceramics, drawing, 2-D design/printmaking, graphic design, 3-D design and painting/mixed media classes andproduce work each year in their respective courses, then choose what they think is their best work to be exhibited it at the Marie Hull Art Gallery located on the Raymond Campus and entered in a contest. An outside juror comes in to judge each piece and choose winners in each category as well as overall or best-of-show pieces of art. But the winners are not the only works of art that are worthy of awe. You might like some of the talent more than the ones picked out for awards. You be the judge. Below is a sampling of just a few of the submissions to the show. I don't want to give away all of the surprise here. Come on over to the Marie Hull Art Gallery and see for yourself what Hinds has to offer in the way or talent and courses to nurture the inner artist in you. Some pieces are for sale, so you might just find yourself filling that space in your home that just needs the right artistic touch to complete your look.

Recently, 21 STEM students from the Utica Campus visited the United States Capital in Washington, D.C. The purpose of the visit was to attend the USA Science & Engineering Festival.
The fourth USA Science & Engineering Festival, the largest and only NATIONAL science festival, featured nationwide contests and school programs, including the popular 'Nifty Fifty' science speaker program and X-STEM Symposium.
As academic dean, I was privileged to make the trip with our students. The Festival culminated with a Grand Finale Expo on April 16-17. More than 350K+ attendees celebrated science at the Expo and engaged in activities with some of the biggest names in STEM.

The Hinds Community College athletic programs have a long standing tradition of success, and due to our student-athletes and coaches wanting to uphold this success, a wide variety of emotions and abilities come out when these young men and women are on the playing fields, courts and courses.

I’ve learned a lot about the history of the Utica Campus in covering events over the past several weeks. Two weeks ago, Founder’s Week was observed, with events taking place each day, reminding students and staff of the legacy of William H. Holtzclaw.
