Hinds Community College tailgating may not be the same as it is at a university, but we still know how to have a good time!

Next week, Sept. 14 to be exact, is the first home football game for this season. This might not seem like a big deal, but it is. This year Hinds turns 100 years old and there is plenty to celebrate!

Football has been a tradition at Hinds since the 1920s, and to this day, it is a big part of the college. But this year, it is more than that. Centennial events are lasting all year long, but this fall, tailgating at Hinds is a big part of this year’s celebration.

On Sept. 14, at 3:30 p.m., there will be a reunion for Coach Troy A. Ricks basketball players. This event will be held in Fountain Hall on the Raymond Campus. Then at 5:30 p.m. former Alumnus of the Year, Alumni Service Award recipients and Sports Hall of Fame inductees will have a reunion at the Centennial Room in Fountain Hall and will be recognized at the football game that evening.

On Sept. 28, beginning at 4:30 p.m., Hinds will have their Thursday Night Lights tailgate recruiting event before the Eagles take on Gulf Coast Community College at 6:30 p.m.

Then on Oct. 12, at 10 a.m., in Fountain Hall on the Raymond Campus, you will find the 50+ Centennial Brunch, honoring alumni from 1917 to 1967. Later that day, at 6:30 p.m., will be the big Homecoming game where current students will be recognized.

Hinds hasn’t had a Saturday home game in quite some time, so we are really excited that this year, our Centennial year, we get to have our last home game on a Saturday. You know what that means? That means it is going to be one big party!

On Oct. 28 Hinds is “Calling All Eagles”!    1958 Megaphone.jpg

Join in the fun and festivities in the Eagles’ Landing from 11:30 a.m. until game time. The Hinds Eagles will take on East Mississippi Community College at 2 p.m. where there will be special recognition of football, Homecoming court, cheerleaders, Miss Hinds, Hi-Steppers and Eagle Marching Band. So if you were an Eagle at one time (or even if you weren’t) come on out and join the fun. This tailgate reunion party is for all alumni and their families to help us wind down what has been one fun year of Centennial celebrations. There will be a picnic-style lunch available for sale from 11:30 a.m. until kickoff. There will also be a number of Hinds student groups that will be tailgating or hosting other activities. The Raymond Campus SGA is sponsoring a Color Fun Run at 9 a.m. If you would like information on how to sign up contact Sharon Alexander at sralexander@hindscc.edu.

Any Hinds alumni group that is interested in tailgating or hosting a special reunion should contact Libby Posey at 601-857-3350 or Olivia.posey@hindscc.edu.

I went to Hinds right out of high school in fall 1990, and was a Hinds Hi-Stepper. That’s me below!

Even though I quit after one semester and started working here in 1992, then got my degree in May 2016 (after finally going back as a part-time student), I have always thought of myself as a Hinds alum.

Every student, from the 18-year-old freshman right out of high school to the 40-something year-old mom that works full time and takes night and online classes in her free time…every student has a different experience and a different appreciation for this institution.

Whether you were a football player in the '50s, or a cheerleader in the '70s, or maybe you just enjoyed watching the game from the stands in the '90s, you were still a major part of Hinds.

And Hinds will always be a major part of you.
