Hinds wrapped up a series of 2012-2013 graduation ceremonies on June 6 with a special one for GED achievers in our district – adults who did not get a high school diploma by the traditional route but passed a battery of tests to get an equivalency certificate.

In some ways, Amanda McMillan of Pearl typifies the non-traditional Hinds Community College student. At age 43, she works full-time waiting tables at Table 100, is divorced and has three children. In her second semester on the Rankin Campus, she is also taking a full-time load of classes at 12 hours.

So after years of “thinking” about it, I finally took the plunge. I am once again a college student. I signed up for an online course in Survey of the Old Testament at Hinds this spring. I’m planning to take New Testament over the summer.

On the desk in my office on the Raymond Campus is one piece of college memorabilia that is not “Hinds.” It’s a gorgeous glass candy dish – red, white and blue with the M in the middle for Ole Miss.
