The Bus Barn Barbecue has been a tradition at Hinds Community College since about 1968. This event is held usually the first or second week in December. It started out with Billy Banes, Coach Joe Renfroe, Powell Taylor (Supervisor of the Bus Barn) and Henry King (Grounds Supervisor). These guys got together and decided to cook a lunch for the Grounds and Bus Barn employees.

The Hinds Lady Bulldogs basketball program has had some difficulties over the past decade. There have been years where the group has struggled to win a single game. Last year, Coach Tomekia Reed took over the program and has brought a winning attitude to the Utica Campus team.

My dad was a blue-collar worker with an eighth-grade education.
Leaving school at a young age wasn’t his idea. He left to support his mother and younger brother and sister. It was the way it was in the post-Depression 1940s without safety nets.
According to family lore, he got his first job on a carpentry crew at about age 14 because the crew actually hired his tools, which had belonged to his dad, a skilled coffin maker.
